The rebuild arrived a year early in Anaheim, and then some: a top-three-pick core carried the Ducks to their first playoff berth since 2017-18, where they stunned the reigning Western Conference champion Oilers in six games and pushed eventual finalist Vegas to six in the second round. Leo Carlsson (67 points) is the franchise, and Anaheim paid him like it, a five-year, $18M deal that makes the 21-year-old the highest-paid player in the NHL. Around him sit 41-goal Cutter Gauthier, Jackson LaCombe's 58-point breakout on the blue line, rookie Beckett Sennecke (second in NHL rookie scoring behind Ivan Demidov), and workhorse goalie Lukas Dostal, with Cup winner A.J. Greer and Jeff Malott adding toughness on the fourth line. But the arrow that was pointing straight up now comes with questions. The back end thinned out, with veterans John Carlson (to Tampa) and Jacob Trouba (to San Jose) both gone, and with Carlsson's cap hit on the books, Gauthier remains an unsigned RFA with little money left to pay him. Joel Quenneville's short-pass possession system still ranks top-3 leaguewide in shot attempts, high-danger chances, and xGF/60, but the summer complicated the climb.
