Matthew Schaefer is the story on Long Island. The 19-year-old, taken first overall, put together one of the great rookie defenseman seasons in NHL history, winning the Calder Trophy with 23 goals and 59 points and cementing himself as a franchise cornerstone. Around him, Mathew Barzal (72 points) drives the offense and Bo Horvat chipped in 31 goals, while Ilya Sorokin was one of the best goaltenders in the league, ranking second in the NHL in goals saved above expected. And yet the Islanders missed the playoffs in a brutal Metro race, a reminder that the supporting cast still has to catch up to the top of the roster. This summer brought change up front, with longtime captain Anders Lee leaving for Utah and veteran Brayden Schenn brought in down the middle.
