The high point of the season may have been a January outdoor game in Miami, where Mika Zibanejad scored the first hat trick in Winter Classic history in a 5-1 win over the defending champs. After that, the wheels came off, GM Chris Drury announced a retool and shipped Artemi Panarin to the Kings before the Olympic break for a prospect and conditional picks, ending a seven-year run in New York. Igor Shesterkin had another strong year by save percentage but the season-long collapse on a roster with this much talent was stunning, the underlying numbers were bottom-10 in xGF% at 5v5 all year and finally caught up. Coaching change and front-office shakeup feel inevitable.
