Gritty-defensive · Rising under Tocchet

Rick Tocchet has the Flyers ahead of schedule. Philadelphia not only returned to the playoffs but won a round, knocking off in-state rival Pittsburgh in six before running into the buzzsaw and getting swept by eventual champion Carolina in round two. Travis Konecny (68 points) and Trevor Zegras (67) led a deeper, more dangerous attack, with Owen Tippett adding 28 goals and Matvei Michkov chipping in 20 in a steady second season. Dan Vladar won 29 games in net and earned a five-year extension, and Philadelphia added Joseph Woll this summer to give Tocchet a genuine tandem in the crease. The structured, defensive identity held up against playoff competition. Rookie Porter Martone flashed star potential in a late cameo, and Sean Couturier's veteran presence anchored a group that suddenly looks like it is arriving early. The next step is turning a first-round series win into a longer run.
