NHL Metro Breakout Candidates 2026-27

Every team has one: a young player the underlying numbers say is about to jump. We ran each Metropolitan roster through the HighDanger model, projected points and an honest floor-and-ceiling band, shot volume, finishing luck (goals versus expected), on-ice share, and playoff flashes, and pulled the single best breakout candidate on all eight teams. The Metro is stacked with young talent, so these read less like thin bets than genuine stars-in-waiting. The box score is where these stories start. The projection is where they are headed.

Blake checks every box a breakout wants. His shot volume climbed from 142 as a rookie to 174 this past season, his ice time from under 14 minutes to 16:30, and his shooting held steady around 12 percent the whole way, so the growth rests on repeatable habits rather than a hot streak. The points followed: 34 to 53, with his assists nearly doubling from 17 to 31. Then came the playoffs, where he was one of Carolina's best players, posting 20 points in 19 games as the Hurricanes won the Cup, one of the finest young postseasons in the league. Winning on that stage at 22 tends to carry forward, and everything about his underlying game says the same. He already drives play at an elite 58.6 percent xGF share, generating far more danger than his goal totals show, and now he lines up alongside Logan Stankoven, a relentless forechecker who should manufacture even more looks for him. The model projects 57 points with a 71 ceiling. More shots, more minutes, and a Cup ring: every indicator points up, and a 65-point season is well within reach.

Columbus Blue Jackets: Adam Fantilli

Fantilli is a star assembling himself in plain sight. Trace the shot volume and the climb is relentless: 115 in an injury-shortened rookie year, 191 the next, and 214 this past season, one of the highest totals in the entire league. His ice time has risen every year too, 15:43 to 17:29 to 18:54, and Columbus now leans on him for nearly 19 minutes a night down the middle. The points followed the workload, 27 to 54 to 59. What is fascinating is that this year's rise came despite his shooting percentage falling from 16.2 to 11.2, a finishing dip the model pegs at 3.6 goals below expected. He scored fewer goals on more and better chances and still set a career high, because his playmaking exploded, assists climbing from 23 to 35. That is the profile of a player whose luck is about to swing back. Now he gets help: Columbus slotted Valeri Nichushkin, a big, skilled power winger, onto his flank alongside Kirill Marchenko. At 21, already the cornerstone Columbus is building its future around, he fires like a number-one center, and the finishing just has to catch up to the volume. The model projects 67 points with an 83 ceiling, and a point-per-game season is squarely in range.

Luke Hughes is the rare breakout candidate whose point total went down. At 22 he is already a number-one defenseman, and the two things that best predict a blue-line leap both trended up: his shot volume rose from 121 to 150, and his ice time climbed from 21:09 to a team-leading 23:01 a night. His shooting percentage fell to an absurd 4.0 percent, less than half of a normal defenseman's rate, which is how six goals hid a career-high shot total. Injuries held him to 68 games too, part of a season the Devils spent battered up and down the roster. Give him a full, healthy year and the shooting corrects on its own. The Devils bet $9M a year on the trajectory, and with Simon Nemec traded to Calgary, they have handed Hughes the blue line outright. The model agrees, projecting 53 points with a 66 ceiling, and the lever is the power play: Hughes already splits the top units with Dougie Hamilton, and as he takes over more of that time, the assists pile up fast. When the puck luck turns, the points come with it, and a 55-point season from the back end is right there.

Matthew Schaefer won the Calder Trophy as an 18-year-old defenseman, and he did it logging 24 minutes and 41 seconds a night, the kind of workload teams reserve for franchise number-ones a decade into their careers, not teenagers in their first. He fired 222 shots and drove the Islanders to 59 points, 23 goals and 36 assists, one of the great age-18 blue-line seasons in recent memory. Defensemen who produce like this at his age tend to become perennial Norris contenders, and the model agrees, projecting 69 points with an 86 ceiling, a band that may still be light. The only honest asterisks are cosmetic: his 10.4 shooting percentage sat a touch high, and his 49.9 percent on-ice xGF is still just even, the two-way polish yet to catch up to the production. For an 18-year-old thrown straight into top-pair minutes, that is not a red flag, it is a to-do list, the kind a sophomore season erases. There is no prior NHL year to measure growth against, only the runway ahead, and everything on it points up. The floor is stardom. The ceiling is a franchise defenseman.

New York Rangers: Gabe Perreault

Perreault's rookie year was really half a rookie year, and it still said plenty. In 49 games he posted 27 points, a mid-40s full-season pace, and drove it at a healthy 1.63 points per 60 at five-on-five. The 21-year-old winger arrived with elite pedigree and playmaking, and the Rangers are leaning in: he has the opportunity to open 2026-27 on the top line alongside Mika Zibanejad and Pavel Dorofeyev, the sniper New York pried from Vegas, exactly the kind of finisher who turns his setups into goals. The honest caution is the shooting. His 16.4 percent clip is unlikely to hold, and a 46.6 percent on-ice xGF says the underlying game is still catching up to the production. But those are first-year growing pains, not a ceiling. The model projects 46 with a 57 ceiling, and the path could not be cleaner: a full, healthy 82 games in a top-six role, plus real power-play time, turns a 49-game cameo into a 50-point season. The pace is already there. The pedigree is already there. Now he just needs the games.

Martone is the boldest swing in the division. His entire NHL resume is 19 games: nine in the regular season for 10 points, then a 10-game playoff run for five more. That is not a sample you forecast from, it is a preview you bet on. At 19 he already plays like a seasoned power forward, scoring from in-tight and imposing himself around the net with a presence most players do not find until four or five years into their careers. He stepped straight onto Philadelphia's top line beside Travis Konecny and produced from the jump. The model, working almost entirely off talent and that scorching cameo, lands at a stunning 74 with a 92 ceiling, the highest projection in this article by a wide margin. Treat that band as a statement of upside, not a promise: nothing on his resume is proven over a full season yet. A big forward who already lives in the hard areas is exactly the profile that becomes a point-a-game player. If the production holds across 82 games, Martone is a star.

Dig into Kindel and he gets more impressive, not less. He played his entire rookie season at 18, one of the youngest regulars in the league, and did not just tread water: 35 points in 77 games, a 53.3 percent on-ice xGF share, and finishing 1.1 goals below what his chances were worth, so none of it came from puck luck. What separates him from most teenage scorers is the two-way commitment behind the offense. He blocked 58 shots, forced 25 takeaways, and already held a power-play role, 10 of his 35 points came on the man advantage, the kind of trust coaches almost never hand an 18-year-old. The one rough edge is puck management: 83 giveaways is a young player's tell, and it is the thing a second season sands down. His ceiling is gated by geography, sitting behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, so his 15 minutes have a cap for now. But Pittsburgh is handing its future to players like him, and the model sees the jump coming, projecting 44 points with 21 goals and a 55 ceiling. Poise and responsibility like this at his age is exactly what a breakout is built on.

Leonard plays like his hair is on fire, and the numbers reward the motor. In his first full season, at 20, he scored 20 goals and 45 points, and the rate underneath is the tell: 2.13 points per 60 at five-on-five is a top-line scoring clip, not a rookie's. He does it with an edge few scorers can match: 124 hits at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, one of the fifteen most physical 20-goal scorers in the league, the kind of heavy, playoff-ready game that ages well. He already produces on the power play too, with 14 man-advantage points. Washington reshaped the group around him: Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch crowd the top six and could pinch his minutes even as they stack skill around him, while Boone Jenner arrives as a hard-nosed center who profiles as a natural fit to pivot his heavy line. The caution underneath is a 43.9 percent on-ice xGF, a sign he was sheltered or outchanced and that the two-way game still has to catch up. But the model projects 53 with a 66 ceiling, and a physical 20-goal scorer producing at this rate at 20 is a 55-point player waiting to happen.
